East Rutherford, NJ [Oct. 31, 2008] - Even horse racing has its Halloween traditions.
In a dappled dash to the wire, Highland Cat held on to win the $35,000 Grey Ghost Handicap by three-quarters of a length on Friday night at the Meadowlands. Ridden by Jose Lezcano, Highland Cat covered the 1 1-16 miles in 1:38.48. Lightning Power rallied four-wide in the stretch to finish second, while it was three lengths back to Raynicks Fan in third. The annual Grey Ghost is a starter handicap reserved strictly for horses registered as grey or roan in color.
The $60,000 Witches Brew was co-featured on the Halloween card. Heckuva Good Time, also with Lezcano up, pulled off the upset in the five-furlong event and notched her second straight win at the Meadowlands this fall.
