INSIDE RALLY HELPS LILLY’S PERFECT, GOMEZ SCORE
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 5, 2012)—Making her first start since April 22, Lilly’s Perfect rallied inside Belle Gallantey in the final sixteenth to win the $38,350 feature Thursday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
The half-length win was the fourth in 21 starts for the 5-year-old daughter of Pleasantly Perfect and the Marquetry mare Lilly Bean. Owned by Calabria Stables, Lynn Chang and Jim Volk and trained by Dean Greenman, the 8-5 second choice increased her earnings to $120,980.
First or second in five of eight starts over synthetic surfaces, Lilly’s Perfect returned $5.20, $3 and $2.80.
Belle Gallantey, the lone 3-year-old in the field, paid $4.80 and $3.20. She finished 2 ¼ lengths in front of Magic Mama, who paid $5.60 to show. Really Elegant weakened to fourth, 7 ¾ lengths behind Magic Mama. Tripped the Light and Whole Enchilada completed the order of finish.
Although he couldn’t quite stay with Belle Gallantey, jockey Edwin Maldondo won three times Thursday, enabling him to move into sole possession of sixth place in the Spring/Summer jockey standings.
Maldonado swept the early double for trainer Jeff Bonde with Attack the Jack, the third victory since May 25 for the 3-year-old Stormy Jack filly, and Balentina. Maldonado, who has 22 wins through 42 days, also won the fourth with Warren’s Kong.
Leading jockey Rafael Bejarano won twice, including an impressive score aboard first time starter Smart and Single for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and owner Kaleem Shah in the sixth.
Bejarano has 65 wins at the meet, 27 more than his closest pursuer Joe Talamo. Defending champion Baffert leads the trainer’s race with 30 victories. John Sadler is second with 19.
Racing resumes Friday. Post time is 7:05 p.m. General admission is $10 - $20 after 8:30 p.m.
At the conclusion of the eight race program, a concert starring Iration will begin at the North Park. Approximate start time is 10:30 p.m.
