INSPIRATION WITHIN WINS AT DEL MAR

In a race marked by an unusual occurrence involving the starting gate, Inspiration Within and jockey David Flores led from wire-to-wire to win Del Mar's featured race Monday, a six-furlong dash for older California-bred fillies and mares.

Shortly after Inspiration Within crossed the finish line, Del Mar's board of stewards posted the inquiry sign concerning the break from the gate of Filter, who was positioned on the outside, in post number seven, under jockey Corey Naktani.

After studying videotape of the break, it was determined that Filter's stall doors malfunctioned, failing to open simultaneously with those of her competitors. Thus, according to rules of the California Horse Racing Board, Filter was declared a non-starter, with $279,163.23 being refunded to those patrons who wagered on Filter in the win-place-show pools and in several exotic categories.
Inspiration Within, a daughter of Helmsman owned by Curt and Lila Lanning and trained by Ed Moger, Jr., scored by 2 ½ lengths over longshot Song and a Wager, with Unusual Jane third. The winner, whose odds dropped from 5-2 to a favored 9/5 with the scratch of Filter, paid $5.80, $3.60 and $2.40. It was her third win in 14 starts. Time for the six furlongs was 1:10.21.

Song and a Wager returned $13.40 and $5, while Unusual Jane paid $2.60 to show.

With no perfect tickets in the Pick Six, Wednesday's program will feature a carryover of $140,095.

Monday's attendance was 8,162.
