It’s Bird Posts Mild Upset in OBS Sunshine Millions Classic

Edmund Gann’s 6-year-old Florida-bred It’s a Bird raced close-up behind the pace set by Rolbea Thoroughbreds’ Finallymadeit in the early going of Saturday’s $1 million OBS Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park, took command in the upper stretch, and never was threatened while drawing out to win by 5¼ lengths over Carol Nyren’s Dry Martini.

Ridden by Julien Leparoux, It’s a Bird had lost three in a row going into the race for trainer Marty Wolfson and paid $24 to win while timed in 1:49:35 for the 1 1/8 miles on a fast track. Hobeau Farm’s 5-year-old gelding Delightful Kiss was the 2-1 favorite in the field of 12, breaking from the far outside, and rallied late in the stretch to gain third under jockey Calvin Borel, only a nose behind the runner-up.

Winning Jockey Quotes

Julien Leparoux:

“We got the perfect race. There was almost no traffic, so he followed the plan pretty good. He broke good. He gave extra at the quarter pole. All I did was try not to lose the No. 1 horse (Finallymadeit), because he got off good. We kept it nice for him and he did the rest. He got stronger as the race went on. I took a look to make sure I was clear, but I knew we were in good shape.”

Jockey Calvin Borel (3rd on favorite Delightful Kiss)

“He ran a great race from the 12-hole. He broke out a little bit at the start and was way wide on the (final) turn, which just gave him too much to do. He still just got beat for second.”

Winning Trainer Quote

Marty Wolfson:

“I wanted Julien (Leparoux) on the lead or close to it. My horse has done that before and that’s his best race. He doesn’t like dirt in his face. When he opens up three or four lengths, he gets stronger. I wasn’t looking for anybody at the eighth pole, but at three-eighths pole I was looking to see if anybody was coming behind. When I saw the 48 half-mile, I felt pretty good. I’ve only had him six months and he’s been wonderful for me. I don’t have any immediate plans for him.”
