Jays Wildcat Wins Juvenile Prep Sunday
NEW ORLEANS (Sunday, November 22, 2009) – Harris Hughey’s Jays Wildcat pressed the pace briefly before taking command leaving the backstretch and then drew off late for a 1 1/2-length score in Sunday’s feature at Fair Grounds – a prep race for the upcoming $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Dec. 12.
The winner, a 2-year-old accredited Louisiana-bred trained by Sturges Ducoing, paid $10.60, $5 and $4.20 and toured the six furlongs in 1:11.65 after alternating for the lead briefly during early splits of 22.27 and 46.26. The son of Wildcat Shoes increased his career earnings to $53,813 with his second win in four lifetime starts.
Set-Hut Stables False Start finished second, a neck in front of entrymate Moyers. As the nom-de-course of the NFL’s star quarterback Jake Delhomme of the Carolina Panthers, the Set-Hut coupling returned $4.80 to place and $5.60 to show.
Racing resumes Thursday at Fair Grounds with 10-race program beginning with a special Thanksgiving Day first post time of 12:40 p.m. The festive holiday program features the 84th running of the traditional Thanksgiving Day Handicap
