JAZZY IDEA SETS COURSE RECORD IN JAMEELA STAKES, LAUREL PARK’S OPENING DAY FEATURE

LAUREL, MD. 09-05-12---Owner trainer Edwin Merryman’s Jazzy Idea swept past the leaders in deep stretch and won going away in the $100,000 Jameela Stakes, the opening day feature of the Laurel Park fall meeting. In doing so, she set a new course record.

Ridden by Luis Garcia and sent to post at even money against eight other Maryland-bred fillies and mares, Jazzy Idea completed the distance over the firm turf in 1:07.45 to better the mark set by Chasin Tiger in 2007.


“I knew we got a really nice horse so there isn’t any reason to get in trouble so I just let the speed go and asked her from the three-sixteenths until the end,” said Garcia. “I never thought she would run that 1:07. This was fun. I have ridden a lot of good horses but this filly is something else. When I asked her she was as strong as any I have been aboard.”

Jazzy Idea paid $4.20 and won by three lengths. Colony Club took second and Queen Chatanika finished third.

This was the third stakes win over the turf this year for the daughter of Great Notion. Previously she had won the Thirty Flags (May 2) at Belmont Park and the Crank It Up (June 9) at Monmouth Park. The 3-year-old now has six wins and five second place finishes in 15 career starts with earnings of $295,730. She spent the summer at Saratoga with respectable finishes in the Grade 1 Prioress and Grade 1 Test.

“Never disappoints, even at Saratoga. I wish Luis was on her up there,” Merryman said. “She’s just something else. I believe she’s as good on the dirt as she is on the grass.”

Merryman indicated Jazzy Idea will make her next start on Jim McKay Maryland Million Day here Saturday, Oct. 6. She is expected to be nominated to the Sprint, Distaff and Oaks.
