JOCKEYS AYARZA, FIGUEROA AND DURAN RECORD OPENING-DAY DOUBLES AT FAIR
SAN MATEO -- Jockeys Jorge Ayarza, Omar Figueroa and Francisco Duran celebrated opening day of the 2008 San Mateo County Fair meeting by winning two races apiece Wednesday at Bay Meadows.
Ayarza captured the first two races of the season, taking the 870-yard opener with the 6-year-old Quarter Horse Slow Motion ($3.40) and the five-furlong second race with the 3-year-old thoroughbred gelding Solo Tour ($42.60).
Figueroa won the fourth race with Ruby Haze ($5.00) and the seventh with Heather's Echo ($6.80). Duran took the third race with Hasty Promises ($21.60) and the ninth with Beau Geni ($5.00).
Wednesday's card kicked off the final 10 days of racing at historic Bay Meadows, which is slated for development following the fair season, which concludes Sunday Aug. 17. Racing is conducted Wednesday through Sunday at the fair and post time is 1:45 p.m.
This Saturday, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will have a chance to pick up a Bay Meadows souvenir in the "Grab Bag Giveaway" promotion. On Saturday, Aug. 16, patrons will receive a commemorative poster celebrating Bay Meadows.
The fair will offer $1 grandstand admission to the final day of racing at Bay Meadows, Sunday, Aug. 17. The $50,000-added Last Dance Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies, will headline the closing-day program.
