Justaroundmidnight Rallies to 26-to-1 Upset in Marshua’s River Sunday
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Trainer Patrick Biancone had Mrs. Paul Shanahan’s 4-year-old Irish-bred filly Justaroundmidnight entered in a modest ‘a other than’ allowance race at Gulfstream Park last Thursday, but when she didn’t draw in off the ‘also-eligible’ list he entered her in Sunday’s $100,000 Marshua’s River Stakes (G3), a move that proved fortuitous.
With jockey Joe Bravo aboard, Justaroundmidnight rated in 10th down the backstretch in the 1 1/16 miles turf test and charged through the stretch for a hard-fought half-length victory over James Lauffer and partners’ 4-year-old filly Persuading, a longshot at 36-to-1 herself that set the pace from the start and held gamely to the final strides.
Team Block’s 6-year-old Never Retreat finished third, beaten a half-length by the runner-up while William Pacella and partners’ 5-year-old C.S. Silk, the 3-to-2 favorite, checked in 10TH in the field of 12 fillies and mares.
Trainer Patrick Biancone (Justroundmidnight): “She was going to run Thursday (‘a other than’ allowance race here on 1/6), but she didn’t get in (off also-eligible list), so we ran her in here. She’s a very, very talented filly, but needs to stay covered up and sometimes they get into trouble with that style, which is what happened the last time she ran (Monmouth Park on June 26). I think she’ll go up to a mile-and-eighth. She has a huge turn of foot. We’ll look at the book and find the right spot for her next.”
(Note: owner Mrs. Paul Shanahan lives in Ireland and raced her there earlier in her career.)
Jockey Joe Bravo (Justroundmidnight): “The hardest part was getting her to draw into the race. This was a really good filly that broke her maiden at Monmouth Park. In her next race they ran her in a stakes and she was the best horse. I was stuck on the rail the whole race with no place to go. This is a horse good.”
