Juvenile Starter/Allowance Events Featured Friday

Two-year-olds will be in the spotlight on Friday’s 10-race program at Calder Race Course with a pair of starter/allowance races at five furlongs, one for colts and geldings and the other restricted to fillies that broke their maidens for a claiming tag of $32,000 or less.

Stride Rite Racing Stable and NTS Stable’s chestnut gelding Cinnamon Road may rule the choice in the colts and geldings division with apprentice Paco Lopez named to ride for trainer Milt Wolfson. The son of Delaware Township broke his maiden by 3 ¼ lengths going five furlongs on July 4 after a fourth-place debut as the favorite in a maiden special event.


Monarch Stables’ homebred Nana’s Appeal will get plenty of attention in this field of seven with Eduardo Nunez aboard for trainer Dave Vivian. The son of B L’s Appeal showed little in a sixth-place debut for a $25,000 tag, but moved up sharply to win his second start by six lengths going wire-to-wire on July 4 for the same price.

Completing this field are Golden Age Stable’s Little Richie, Ariel Smith; S. Marable and W. Cheeks et al’s King Combo, Marleni Noguera; Moe Williams’ Masterofballydoyle, David Boraco; Charles Braden’s Brother Terry, Juan Leyva; and Douglas Gibson’s Grand Cash, Wilmer Galviz.

William Churly’s Jazz Her Up looks like the filly to beat in the distaff division with Javier Santiago aboard for trainer George Mikhalides. The daughter of Smooth Jazz was a modest $5,000 OBS August yearling purchase and won her only start on July 4 by 6 ¼ lengths for a $32,000 claiming price with no takers.

Completing the field of six fillies in this race are Roger Urbina’s Sauden Maid, Juan Leyva; Dan Hurtak’s Lola’s Ridge, Eddie Dominguez; Monarch Stables’ Swing Music, Eduardo Nunez; D and E Horses and Herman Wilensky’s Sarahthetiger, Daniel Coa; and Maxine and Herold Simms’ It’s Just Gorgeous, William Henry.
