KENTUCKY OAKS 138 BARN NOTES Wednesday, April 25, 2012

AMIE’S DINI – Mike Walker and Lou Sutterfield’s Amie’s Dini, runner-up in the Honeybee (Grade III) and Fantasy (GII) at Oaklawn Park for trainer Ron Moquett, galloped 1 ½ miles under Laura Moquett during the 15-minute period following the renovation break from 8:30-8:45 a.m. (all times Eastern) when the track is reserved for training by Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum Brands (GI) and Kentucky Oaks (GI) contenders.

BELIEVE YOU CAN – Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) winner Believe You Can galloped a mile after the morning renovation break under trainer Larry Jones.

Believe You Can is owned by Brereton Jones, who won the 2008 Kentucky Oaks with Proud Spell, who was trained by Larry Jones.

Rosie Napravnik, who has been aboard the Proud Citizen filly in her past three starts, has the riding assignment in the Kentucky Oaks.

Believe You Can is scheduled to work Sunday.

COLONIAL EMPRESS – Bluegrass Hall’s Colonial Empress worked a half-mile in :48.40 after the renovation break over a track labeled as “good,” under jockey Ramon Vazquez.

Working on her own, Colonial Empress posted fractions of :12 and :24 in the move that was the third fastest of 35 at the distance.

The daughter of Empire Maker is winless in three career starts, but picked up $22,500 in graded stakes money with a third-place finish in the Honeybee (GIII) behind On Fire Baby.

Those earnings place Colonial Empress 15th on the list of fillies under consideration for the Oaks that is limited to the top 14 graded money earners that pass the entry box.

“We are not in yet,” trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. “She will run in either the Oaks or the Eight Belles.”

The Eight Belles Presented by Xerox (GIII) will be run on Oaks Day, May 4, at seven furlongs.

EDEN’S MOON / JEMIMA’S PEARL / MAMMA KIMBO – Kaleem Shah’s Eden’s Moon, winner of the Las Virgenes (GI) in March at Santa Anita, galloped 1 ½ miles after the renovation break under exercise rider George Alvarez.

Trained by Bob Baffert, who won the Oaks last year with Plum Pretty and also in 1999 with Silverbulletday, Eden’s Moon will be ridden in the Oaks by Martin Garcia.

Baffert has two other Oaks hopefuls in Jemima’s Pearl and Mamma Kimbo, both of whom worked Tuesday. The trainer said both came out of their works fine and will return to the track in the morning.

Jemima’s Pearl, owned by Gillian Campbell, R. Group Management and Greenwood Lodge Farm, had worked five furlongs in 1:01.60 while going in company with Arkansas Derby (GI) winner Bodemeister. Joe Talamo will have the mount in the Oaks.
Mamma Kimbo, owned by Peachtree Stable, worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Tuesday. Mike Smith has the Oaks riding assignment.

KARLOVY VARY – Alex Campbell Jr.’s Karlovy Vary, winner of the Central Bank Ashland (GI) in her most recent start, galloped 1 3/8 miles under exercise rider Marty Metcalf early Wednesday morning.

Trained by Rusty Arnold, Karlovy Vary had arrived here from Keeneland on Tuesday afternoon. The Dynaformer filly had been here last fall when she ran seventh in the Golden Rod (GII) behind probable Oaks rival On Fire Baby.

James Graham will have the Oaks mount on Karlovy Vary, who is scheduled to work Saturday.

OAKS LILY – Jonathan Rey, Javier Sarmieto and Dante Zanelli Jr.’s Oaks Lily galloped 1 ½ miles after the renovation break under exercise rider Patricia Eldridge.

ON FIRE BABY – Anita Cauley’s On Fire Baby, winner of the Pocahontas (GII) and Golden Rod (GII) last fall, visited the paddock before galloping 1 ½ miles under Joe Johnson early Wednesday morning.
Trained by Gary Hartlage, On Fire Baby is scheduled to work Friday or Saturday depending on weather.

SUMMER APPLAUSE – Gillian Campbell, R. Group Management and Greenwood Lodge Farm’s Summer Applause galloped 1 ½ miles under Jeff Lopez shortly after the track opened at 5:45.
Winner of the Rachel Alexandra (GIII), Summer Applause is scheduled to work Friday. Garrett Gomez will have the mount in the Oaks on the Bret Calhoun trainee.

YARA – Peras International’s Yara galloped 1 ½ miles prior to the renovation break at Churchill Downs’ Trackside Training Center under regular exercise rider Mario Diaz. Trainer Jose Garoffalo plans to bring Yara to Churchill Downs on Friday to breeze beneath the Twin Spires following the renovation break.
