Lickety Lemon finds winning note in Flaming Page
TORONTO, September 21 - Charles Laloggia's Lickety Lemon captured Sunday's 1 1/2-mile Flaming Page Stakes at Woodbine.
The daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, who won the Belmont Stakes at the same distance on dirt, gobbled up the extra yardage like an experienced stayer, galloping away to win the $102,500 event.
"She's got great endurance," said winning jockey Chantal Sutherland.
The bay filly is the second Woodbine-based sophomore in as many days to successfully defeat elder rivals. On Saturday, Queen's Plate winner Not Bourbon won the Overskate Stakes in convincing fashion.
Lickety Lemon settled in fifth early, rallied three-wide on the turn and seized command nearing the quarter-pole.
The Flaming Page score ended a 13-month winless skid for Lickety Lemon, who kicked off her career impressively with two straight victories.
Trainer Mark Casse said the bar was set high for Lickety Lemon, this season.
"She's run against a lot of good horses this year," he explained. "We were beginning to think she didn't like this (E.P. Taylor) turf course. Her race the other day here was a little flat."
Casse opted to give Sutherland the call because she could carry the 114 pounds assigned to Lickety Lemon.
"Chantal was able to do the weight," explained Casse. "We weren't unhappy with Patrick (Husbands). It was purely the weight."
For breeding purposes down the line, Casse said the Flaming Page triumph was significant.
"This filly has a half-brother in Europe that's a very good two-year-old," said Casse. "It was very important for her to become a stakes winner. She's been stakes-placed a couple of times."
In fact, Lickety Lemon has finished in the money in five stakes over three different turf courses.
As a two-year-old, she was third in the Grade 3 Natalma and a close second in the Jessamine at Keeneland.
This year, she was a troubled third in the Madame Jumel at Saratoga. At Woodbine, she was second in Woodbine's Alywow and third in the Ontario Colleen.
The Flaming Page elevates Lickety Lemon's earnings to $244,000.
Lickety Lemon returned $7.80, $4.40 and $2.70, combining with Oh Glory Be ($11.10, $6) for a $91.20 exactor. Classy Landlady ($3.70) rounded out a triactor worth $508.60.
Queenly Luck and The Niagara Queen were scratched.
