Lopez Up to Old ‘Trix’ in Gulfstream Feature

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Paco Lopez, the defending riding champion at Gulfstream Park, capped a four-win day with an upset score aboard Trix in the City ($37) in Wednesday’s featured eighth race.

The Veracruz, Mexico native had previously earned visits to the winner’s circle with Cove Star ($19) in the third race, Triple E ($9.40) in the fourth and Chateau D’Kim ($16.80) in the seventh.

Lopez rated the 17-1 outsider in third behind dueling favorites Barracks Road and Tapitsfly through the backstretch before making his move heading into the far turn. Trix in the City passed a tiring Tapitsfly on his way to engaging Barracks Road leaving the turn into the homestretch. Trix in the City edged away through the stretch to post a half-length victory over late-running 20-1 longshot Romin Robin, who finished another half-length ahead of Sweet Theresa, who was sent to post at 18-1.

Trix in the City, who ran a mile on turf in 1:34 2/5, keyed a $1 trifecta payoff of $3,459 in the $57,000 allowance race for fillies and mares.

Barracks Road, the 9-5 favorite, and Tapitsfly, the 5-2 second-choice who was making her first start since winning the 2009 Juvenile Fillies Turf, faded to seventh and 11th, respectively, after their early efforts.

Trix in the City, who had previously finished ninth in the Athena Stakes (G3) over a soft turf course at Belmont in October, is trained by Richard Violette for Patsy C. Symons.

There were two winning tickets Wednesday in the 10-cent Rainbow 6 worth $5,370.48. Since there wasn’t a single winner, the Rainbow 6 jackpot is now $31,498. The 50-cent Pick 5 returned $5,953.60.
