Love Who, Karmageddon Capture Jersey Juvenile Divisions
Love Who was the standout performer as two-year-old state breds took center stage in the $60,000 Jersey Juvenile Friday night at Meadowlands Racetrack.
Love Who crushed the field in the colts division by 10 3/4 lengths to pick up his first stakes trophy in five career efforts. Ridden by Stewart Elliott, Love Who matched strides with Pinelands Pete through preliminary fractions of :22, 44.3 and 55.2 before pulling away at the top of the lane. He stopped the teletimer in 1:09 for the six-furlong test over a fast main track.
Headless Horseman Racing's Karmageddon nipped the pacesetter Our Eponene by a nose to win the fillies division, race eight. Karmageddon, with Chuck C. Lopez aboard, sat fourth off the early fractions and closed fastest of all to post her second win in three starts. First-time starter N J Esquire stalked Our Eponene and gamely rallied to finish a nose behind in third.
Karmageddon stepped the six furlongs in 1:10.2 and paid $11.60 to win. Douglas Nunn trains the homebred daughter of Wildcat Heir-Kismet, by Kissin Kris.
Barbie Girl posted her third win in seven starts for owner John Conte, the 2009 DRF/NTRA Handicapping Champion in the ninth race. Conte won Meadowlands Racetrack's Horseplayer World Series Qualifier last March and will represent the track in the 2010 championship, Feb. 18-20, at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas.
Lezcano, Mangalee Okay After Spill In Second Race
Jockeys Jose Lezcano and Navin Mangalee emerged unscathed after falling from their mounts in the second race Friday night at Meadowlands Racetrack.
Lezcano's mount Spanish Harlan (no. 2) was third on the rail when he stumbled, clipping the heels of eventual winner Blazenbare (no. 3) at the nine-sixteenths pole and unseating his rider. Mangalee also became unseated from his mount Mangas Coloradas (no. 5) as they tried to avoid the fallen Lezcano.
Both jockeys were evaluated by the NJSEA Medical Department and cleared to resume riding.
