Me the Sea and G T faces 11 rivals in Kingarvie
TORONTO, November 26 - Me the Sea and G T goes for his first stakes 'W' in Saturday's $125,000 Kingarvie at Woodbine.
The G.T. Heat Stable charge enters the 1 1/16-mile, Ontario-sired event on the strength of a strong third-place finish in the Bull Page on October 13. The Steve Owens trainee made up 3 3/4 lengths in the final quarter-mile and was just 1 1/4 lengths from victory.
"They went pretty quick in front of him. He settled really well and came with his run," said Owens, adding that jockey Patrick Husbands told him after that the youngster was starting to impress him with his ability to rate and that he may be developing into a 'nice little horse.'
"He missed the last stakes race because he caught a two-year-old bug. He's coming in fresh," said Owens.
Me the Sea and G T, who will be ridden by Husbands, has worked four times since the Bull Page, all at a distance of five furlongs.
"He's had his regular breezes," said Owens. "He was fighting off (the bug), so we couldn't push too hard on him. I wish I could have got some sort of prep race into him, to go two turns. I've had to train him into it. He's trained well."
Owens said Me the Sea and G T is a 'quirky' horse. The homebred son of Dance to Destiny has had an eventful campaign, on and off the track.
In his second career start, the starting gate latch was sprung before jockey Emile Ramsammy was settled in the irons. Despite the unusual occurrence, the gelding was up on the lead in advance of the opening quarter. He tired and wound up 11th.
Stewards deemed Me the Sea and G T to have had an unfair start and declared him a non-starter for wagering purposes.
Two starts later, he broke his maiden with an effective rally from fifth to edge Mega Rush by a head.
"It took us a little while to get him to settle down. After a couple of races he started to figure out what we were asking of him," explained Owens.
On September 19, Me the Sea and G T showed that he was more than just an average racehorse, but not because he was able to win his second start in a row and defeat open company. It's the fact that the gelding was willing and able to put forth a winning effort after the trouble he got himself into before the race that is a minor miracle.
"He's a quirky kind of individual when he goes to the track," explained Owens. "He's got his own attitude. Prior to his second win, he was walking to the track and they were cutting down trees at Barb Minshall's barn. He saw them, got loose from the handlers and ran all the way back to the barn. He was wired. They gathered him back up, got him back into racing mode and jogged him all the way to the front side."
Owens said he was concerned that he might have to scratch the Ontario-bred after the ordeal. He didn't find any gashes or bruising on the gelding and proceeded to clear him to run. Me the Sea and G T sat just behind a very slow pace and outsprinted his five rivals home for a 1 1/4-length tally.
Me the Sea and G T is a two-time winner from six starts with $103,610 earned. The Kingarvie Stakes will be his second stakes attempt and his first try around two turns.
"It's a new venture for him. But his pedigree suggests that he should get the distance," said Owens.
The gelding is a half-brother to Here Comes Chrissy, who is currently on the cusp of a two-race win streak, including a 1 1/16-mile event on November 15.
"He managed two turns quite well the other day," offered Owens.
The dam of the two brothers is unraced G T's Miss Gretch, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winner Shaw's Creek.
The Kingarvie Stakes is slated for race six on Saturday's 10-race programme.
