ALBANY -- Merry Marino, receiving a confident ride from jockey Frank Alvarado, won the $21,580 feature race at Golden Gate Fields in impressive fashion Sunday.

Alvarado waited until midstretch before asking Merry Marino for her best and she responded with a strong closing kick, pulling away from her five opponents for a two-length victory in the one-mile contest for 2-year-old fillies.

Fruitfully took second by a neck over Buttons and Bows, who finished a neck in front of Croxie.

Merry Marino was making her first trip around two turns and she stopped the timer in 1:40.62. The 6-to-5 favorite, Merry Marino paid $4.60 after recording her second victory in three career starts.

Owned and bred by Rancho San Miguel, Merry Marino is a California-bred daughter of Marino Marini. Merry Marino is trained by Steve Specht.

A Pick Six carryover of $18,817 will be on the line when racing continues Monday at Golden Gate Fields. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
