An elite list of 12 jockeys have been confirmed to take part in the Meydan Masters International Jockeys’ Challenge presented by Longines which opens the 2012 Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan on Thursday January 5, 2012.

The Dubai Racing Club extended invitations to 12 of the world’s leading jockeys who won many of the most prestigious races throughout 2011. They will compete in a points based competition consisting of four races offered during the racing programmes on January 5 and 6 at Meydan Racecourse.

Combined, the Meydan Masters jockeys have won a staggering 61 Group One races around the world during 2011 and include the winning riders of the Dubai World Cup, Caulfield Cup, W.S. Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

There are also seven that won Classics in 2011 which included the Derby, St Leger, 2000 Guineas, 1000 Guineas, Hong Kong Derby, Japanese Derby and Irish Derby.

The 12 confirmed riders are; Mickael Barzalona, Maxime Guyon and Christophe Lemaire from France; William Buick, Ryan Moore, Colm O'Donoghue and Tom Queally from Great Britain and Ireland; Italy’s Mirco Demuro and Frankie Dettori; Kenichi Ikezoe from Japan; Andrasch Starke from Germany and Australia’s Craig Williams.

CEO and Chairman of Meydan, Saeed H. Al-Tayer said: “To have such illustrious names competing in the Meydan Masters further advances horseracing in Dubai on the world's stage.”

President of Longines, Walter Von Kanel stated, “It is an immense honor for all of us from the house of Longines to be involved in an equestrian event as celebrated as the Meydan Masters. Sharing the stage with such prominent and noteworthy names from the world of horseracing subsequent to our partnership with the eminent Meydan Group, we are thrilled to embark on this journey and look forward to an enthralling racing season.”

Points are accumulated based on the riders’ finishes in the race, and the winner is determined by the highest point total secured in those races. Great Britain’s Richard Hills won the inaugural event in 2010 and Calvin Borel of the USA was champion in 2011.

The post time for the first race on January 5th is 6:30 pm; on January 6th - 3:00 pm. Admission is free to the public areas and opens 1.5 hours before the first race at 5 pm and 1:30 pm, respectively.
