ARCADIA, Calif., (Oct. 15, 2009) – Despite no payoff higher than $11.20 and an odds-on favorite taking the final race, Oak Tree’s Pick Six eluded fans on Thursday with a carryover of $47,855.20 ripe for the taking during Friday’s program at Santa Anita.

A 2-1 second choice captured Thursday’s feature when Warren’s Appeal, third in her two previous starts, closed strongly to dominantly gain her first victory of the year in the $44,400 Beautyandthebeast Purse for California-bred fillies and mares at one mile on turf.

With Rafael Bejarano at the controls, Benjamin C. Warren’s 4-year-old homebred daughter of Bartok drew off to score by 2 ¾ lengths over 6-5 favorite Asanti with Victory Dancer another 1 ¾ lengths back in third. The final time was 1:34.15.

The second choice at 2-1 in the wagering, Warren’s Appeal paid $6.20, $3 and $2.20. Asanti, ridden by Garrett Gomez, paid $3 and $2.60. The show price on Victory Dancer, with Joel Rosario aboard, was $2.60.

The field was reduced to six with the earlier scratch of morning line favorite Mama Rosa, who was reported to have a mild fever.

Warren’s Appeal was content to track leaders Victory Dancer and Asanti during much of the early running before taking command in midstretch and swiftly widening her winning margin.

“It looks like she should be able to move up a little after winning so easily and galloping out strongly,” said George Gutierrez, who trains Warren’s Appeal. The win was her third in 26 starts and first since last Dec. 31. The winning purse of $26,400 boosted her career earnings to $128,528.

Oak Tree continues its popular Free Fridays promotion on Friday when post time is moved back to 2 p.m. and $1 is the cost of admission, box seats on a first-come, first-served basis, hot dogs, beer, sodas, popcorn and coffee. The Pick Six on the eight-race card will begin with the third race.
