Mizzna is back
All eyes will be on Mizzna at Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening as the 2008 Dubai Kahayla Classic winner, the Purebred Arabian curtain raiser to the world's richest racenight, makes her eagerly awaited return to action.
It was exactly a year ago she was last seen in action and will be bidding a repeat win in the National Day Cup prep, over the same course and distance as the season's first Group 1 event in three weeks time. On that occasion she beat Fryvolous, who went on to win the 2009 Dubai Kahayla Classic, but she missed the rest of the season through injury.
Rod Simpson's Time Out is another to consider but it will be a major shock if Mizzzna is beaten and her trainer Eric Lemartinel said: "She has been off a year but appears to have retained all her ability. She had a bone chip removed but appears to have recovered well and is in good form and ready for a run."
Her only UAE defeat came on her second local start, in the 2007 Dubai Kahayla Classic and that race is her 2010 target.
The Thoroughbred equivalent, which concludes the card, is a handicap with the Satish Seemar-trained Eddie Jock, a very useful performer at his best, heading the weights.
Veteran Seihali is next and his trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam saddled two winners on Friday at Jebel Ali to demonstrate the wellbeing of his string. William Buick elects to ride him, with Daragh O'Donohoe taking the spare ride on stable companion Hallhoo.
Like Selvaratnam, Erwan Charpy has a good record in Thoroughbred races at Abu Dhabi and his Aqmaar has to be considered in an open race.
