Musical Lineup in Place For Rockin’ Del Mar Summer
At the racetrack they’ll tell you: "Stick with a winner." The chaps booking Del Mar's musical summer followed that maxim just about to a "T" in lining up the 10 acts that will fill the seaside season with sweet sounds on seven Friday evenings and three weekend dates.
Nine of the performers already have proven themselves favorites at Del Mar at least once, including all three weekend special concerts -- the flashy alternative rock band The Flaming Lips (Saturday, August 15) and the hugely popular reggae groups Steel Pulse (Saturday, August 22) and Ziggy Marley (Sunday, September 6).
The returning bands for this 16th year of Friday shows -- this year dubbed the "Friday Concert Series" -- are G-Love and Special Sauce (July 24), The Wailers (July 31), Common Sense (August 14), Pinback (August 21), Super Diamond (August 28) and Pete Yorn (September 4).
"Our musical lineup this summer is filled with fan favorites," said DMTC's vice president for Marketing Craig Dado. "These groups have large followings and the musicians all seem to love our outdoor venues and the high-spirited crowds. It should be another fun summer all the way around."
The weekend shows will take place in the track's infield, while the Friday events are held in Plaza de Mexico, just inside the main entrance to the track. The concerts, which in all cases begin at approximately 7:30 following the running of the day’s last race, are free to fans who pay the usual track admission fee.
The "Friday Concert Series" is sponsored by Jack Daniel's, while Del Mar Thoroughbred Club once again will partner with San Diego's top alternative radio station -- 91X -- to ensure its successful promotion. The Saturday concerts come under different sponsorship: the August 15 show with The Flaming Lips is present by Coors Light, while both the Steel Pulse concert on August 22 and the Ziggy Marley appearance as part of an evening titled the Roots Rock Reggae Fest are sponsored by Heineken.
For those keeping score, Common Sense, the Southern California ultra-popular reggae-oriented group, will be making a record 12th appearance at Del Mar. Reggae master Ziggy Marley, the son of the iconic Bob Marley, and alternative rocker Pete Yorn both will be making their fifth local appearances. The Neil Diamond cover band Super Diamond and the San Diego-based indie rockers Pinback will be back on board for the fourth time. The Wailers, the reggae group that did their seminal work with Bob Marley, will be making their third Del Mar showing. Finally, the hip-hop, blues, folk group G-Love and Special Sauce, The Flaming Lips and Steel Pulse all will be appearing for a second occasion.
In addition to the concerts already noted, the popular band The English Beat will play on the track's closing program, September 9, following the season’s final race for the free farewell event titled "Party in the Paddock."
Del Mar's 37-day season opens on Wednesday, July 22.
