Navarro Wins His First Race

LAUREL, MD. 8-7-09---Apprentice rider Joshua Navarro won aboard just his fifth lifetime mount when Fifty Two in a Row captured the sixth race this afternoon at Laurel Park.

Sent to post at 9-1 for owner-trainer John Alecci, Fifty Two in a Row raced outside the speed before Navarro pushed his mount to the fore, then out finished Marciella to secure the victory. The filly paid $21.20.

Navarro, who speaks very limited English, was born in Puerto Rico. The slender youngster, who will turn eighteen in October, earned the praise of steward John Burke when he remarked, “He showed a lot of maturity, switching whips and keeping his mount off that other horse going to the wire.”

As he returned to the jockey’s quarters, Navarro received the traditional good-natured dowsing of water and talcum powder from his fellow riders to celebrate his first win.
