NEW YEAR BEGINS WITH PICK SIX CARRYOVER OF $143,011
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 1, 2009)—Under picturesque New Year’s Day weather conditions, form for the most part, did not prevail at Santa Anita as no one correctly tabbed six winners in the Pick Six, resulting in a carryover of $143,011 into Friday. Additionally, no one selected the top five finishers in the afternoon’s 10th race, resulting in a Super High 5 carryover of $78,259.
Thursday’s Pick Six consisted of races five through 10 and just one post time favorite, Dream Now, in race seven, managed to win. Ridden by David Flores, Dream Now took blinkers off Thursday and cruised home by 5 ¼ lengths, returning $3.40 to win. Conditioned by Julio Canani, the 3-year-old colt by Medaglia d’Oro is owned by Bloodstock Management Services Inc. or Preston.
Race six went to Slew of Candy and Joe Talamo, returning $18.40 to win. Owned by Black Diamond Racing LLC and Mann, Slew of Candy is trained by Gary Stute and won by a length.
In one the most impressive performances of the afternoon, the eighth race was taken by Booted under Victor Espinoza, paying $11.60 to win. The 4-year-old colt by A.P. Indy won by 2 ½ lengths, getting the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.17. Booted is owned by B. Wayne Hughes and is trained by Richard Mandella.
Race nine went to Charming Legacy under Alex Solis, returning $29.40 to win. The 6-year-old mare by Danehill, owned by EZ Stable and McAnally, and trained by Ron McAnally, won by ¾ of a length.
Thursday’s 10th event went to the 3-year-old maiden filly Jaylo’s Mark under Chantal Sutherland, returning $22.60 to win. Owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams and trained by Jeff Mullins, the California-bred daughter of Benchmark won by 1 ¾ lengths.
The Super High 5, offered daily on Santa Anita’s final race, proved elusive as the odds on the first five finishers were as follows: 10-1, 2-1, 6-1, 28-1 and 67-1.
Thursday’s on-track attendance was 10,132, and the total handle was $9,377,515.
Santa Anita will offer an eight race program on Friday, with first post time at 1 p.m.
