ONE Belmont Barn Under precautionary Quarantine

Smell My Carrots, a three-year-old New York bred maiden gelding, was euthanized today after being found in his stall in Belmont Park’s Barn 38 with a fever and unable to stand, according to New York Racing Association’s Chief Examining Veterinarian Dr. Anthony Verderosa.

Blood samples have been sent to a laboratory in Kentucky, with results expected Tuesday. With equine herpes among the possible causes of the horse’s illness, Barn 38 has been placed under a precautionary quarantine.

Horses stabled in Barn 38 are being monitored and will not be allowed to race or ship out at this time. They will be allowed to train separately from the rest of the horse population on the nearby Belmont Park training track after normal training hours.

Eugene Loughlin’s Smell My Carrots was trained by John Candlin, who shares Barn 38 with a number of other trainers.

Smell My Carrots last started on August 22nd at Saratoga, finishing 8th of 9 in a New York bred maiden claiming sprint, his eighth career start. The horse was scratched from yesterday’s seventh race.
