One Caroline & Ginger Brew Clash in Rampart Sunday

G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s undefeated 4-year-old filly One Caroline will be favored to keep her record perfect in Sunday’s $150,000 Rampart Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, but will face her sternest test yet with Stronach Stable’s Canadian champion filly Ginger Brew among six rival fillies and mares.

Jockey Edgar Prado rides One Caroline for trainer Rusty Arnold in the 1 1/8 miles Rampart as the roan/gray daughter of Unbridled’s Song bids for her third straight victory of the meet and fifth overall all after winning her first two starts at Churchill Downs last spring at 1 1/16 miles.

One Caroline won both of her starts at Gulfstream over a one-turn mile. She took an allowance on Jan. 15 by 6¾ lengths and the Sabin Stakes (G2) by a length last out on Feb. 20 in her stakes debut. One Caroline was a $400,000 Saratoga yearling purchase.

Javier Castellano will have the mount on Ginger Brew as she bids to bounce back from a rough trip when fifth on turf as the favorite in the Endeavour Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 14. That race marked her first off-the-board performance in 10 career starts for trainer Brian Lynch, who sent out Stronach Stable’s Spring Waltz to capture last year’s edition of the Rampart.

A Canadian homebred chestnut by Milwaukee Brew, Ginger Brew won two of three starts at Gulfstream last year after a winning debut as a 2-year-old at Woodbine. She went back to Canada after winning the Calder Oaks in late April and romped home a six-length winner of the Woodbine Oaks and just missed by a head two weeks later finishing second against male rivals in the prestigious Queens Plate.

Trainer Nick Zito sends out Tomisue Hilbert and John Menard’s 5-year-old homebred Striking Tomisue with Jermaine Bridgmohan aboard. The daughter of Smart Strike has won her last two starts, a one-mile allowance here on Feb. 8 and the Wayward Lass Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 28.

Completing the field for the 30th running of the Rampart are Mr. and Mrs. Leverette Miller’s So Glitzy, Elvis Trujillo; Lael Stable’s Hamsa, Jose Lezcano; Darley Stable’s Sea Chanter, Chris DeCarlo; and J. Mack Robinson’s African Violet, Julien Leparoux.
