One Caroline Remains Perfect After Rampart Romp Sunday
G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s brilliant 4-year-old filly One Caroline ran her undefeated career record to five-for-five Sunday at Gulfstream Park after a dominating wire-to-wire victory in the $150,000 Rampart Stakes (G2), coasting home 6½ lengths ahead of Darley Stable’s 22-1 longshot Sea Chanter.
Jockey Edgar Prado had One Caroline in front shortly after a somewhat awkward break in the 1 1/8 miles test, and had plenty left when challengers got close nearing the stretch, drawing clear effortlessly. The roan/gray daughter of Unbridled’s Song won both of her starts last year at Churchill Downs and all three at this meet for trainer Rusty Arnold, most recently the Sabin Stakes (G3) on Feb. 20.
Winning Jockey Quote
“She did it all herself today. I just wanted to get her to the lead and let her go. This is a pretty special horse. There was no question today who the best horse was. I don’t ever want to be a hero, that’s not me. The easier the ride, the better for me.”
Winning Trainer Quote
“She’s going to have to figure out not to go right from the gate. Once she got in front today, she handed him (Prado) the bit and everything was good, but she needs to know that, if somebody outbreaks here, or somebody sends a ‘rabbit,’ we’re going to have to get her back. The talent is unbelievable. It’s a good problem to have to slow one down. She’s 17 hands. She couldn’t run at 2. She was so big, she wasn’t ready for it. If she’s all right she’ll run on Oaks Day at Churchill Downs (May 1). I believe it’s the Louisville Distaff (G2).”
