Patrick Mahony promoted to NYRA Senior Vice President

A respected expert in Pari-Mutuel operations, Patrick Mahony has been promoted to the post of Senior Vice President of Mutuels, The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced today. His previous title had been Vice President of Pari-Mutuel Operations. Mahony joined NYRA in 2003 after a distinguished career at Gulfstream Park, Calder, Hialeah, Atlantic City Race Track, Garden State Race Track, and Monmouth Park.

“At NYRA, Pat has worked diligently to position our Mutuel department as one of the finest in the industry,” NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward said. “He’s put a solid management team in place while establishing the highest standards of credibility and integrity. In addition, Pat has worked with the New York State Racing and Wagering Board and industry organizations on national tote strategies and protocols.”

Pari-Mutuel operations have long been a Mahony family business. His grandfather, Mort Mahony, was a pioneer of modern Pari-Mutuel wagering, establishing the system a century ago at Pimlico and later bringing this form of wagering to tracks throughout the East Coast and Canada, including New York, where in 1940 he established the Pari-Mutuel wagering system at Belmont Park and Saratoga. All three of Mort Mahony’s sons worked in the burgeoning Pari-Mutuel business, most notably Pat’s father Riggs Mahony who, through his Mahony Organization, operated mutuel systems at tracks in Florida, the Mid-Atlantic circuit and at many other locations nationwide.

The most experienced, longest-serving Pari-Mutuel executive in the thoroughbred industry, Pat Mahony has enjoyed a career that has spanned the transformation of Pari-Mutuel wagering from manual calculations of wager odds/payoffs to electro-mechanical, to the current electronic era of mutuel/tote operation.

In addition to directing the NYRA Mutuel Department, Mahony is also valued member of NYRA’s Leadership Committee.
