Quality Road Is Fan’s Choice On Opening Day Of Kentucky Derby Future Pool 3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 2, 2009) – Florida Derby (Grade I) winner Quality Road justified his status as the morning line choice for the third and final pool of Churchill Downs’ 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) when racing fans across North America made the Jimmy Jerkens-trained colt a tepid 5-1 favorite on Thursday’s opening day of betting in the four-day pool.

Edward P. Evans’ homebred son of Elusive Quality, a winner of three of four career races, was the narrow people’s choice on the Pool 3 betting roster that includes 23 individual horses and a mutuel field that consists of all other 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. Close behind in Thursday’s wagering at odds of 8-1 were Vinery LLC and Fox Hill Farm’s Louisiana Derby (GII) winner Friesan Fire and Sham Stakes (GIII) winner The Pamplemousse, one of the favorites for Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby (GI).

The “all others” betting interest, which was the favorite in both of this year’s previous Kentucky Derby Future pools, and Gotham (GI) winner I Want Revenge were next in Thursday’s wagering at 11-1.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, now in its 11th year, provides racing fans with an opportunity to bet on contenders for the 135th renewal of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) at odds that could be more attractive than those that available on the day of the race. This third pool of the 2009 Derby Future bet is the just the second to in the bet’s history to offer exacta wagering. Both the traditional KDFW “win” bet and the new exacta wager require a $2 minimum wager. There are no scratches or refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

A total of $27,016 was wagered on the opening day KDFW Pool 3, with $7,927 of that placed in the exacta pool. Pool 3 wagering is scheduled to resume at noon (all times EDT) on Friday, April 3. The pool is set to close at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 5.

The 135th running of the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at Churchill Downs.

Real time odds, exacta payouts and other information on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are available on the official event Web site at http://www.kentuckyderby.com.
