Quaolina takes Group 1 Liwa Oasis
Champion Trainer Doug Watson saddled two winners from two runners at Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening, including Quaolina, the impressive winner of the featured Group 1 Liwa Oasis over 1400m.
Kindly sponsored by Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club, the Capital’s 13th meeting of the season was their third last and Watson’s double puts him within touching distance of retaining his crown.
Richard Hills was in the saddle on Quaolina, already a Group 1 winner in the UK and opening her UAE account at the second attempt having chased home Fryvolous last time.
Watson had earlier made the perfect start to the evening when Fernando Jara partnered Razin to an emphatic win in the opening 2200m maiden in the colours of Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Watson said: “It is a privilege to train for Sheikh Mansoor this year and he has sent me a few nice horses so it is great to get a winner.”
Fryvolous’ trainer, Rod Simpson, heartened by the win of Quaolina, was earlier celebrating another feature race winner after Daragh O’Donohoe steered his Mujtahid to the easiest win of the night in the Emirates Colts’ Classic over 1600m.
Simpson said: “We have some nice young horses as well as Fryvolous to look forward to and it has been a great season.”
Ahmad Ajtebi combined with Mohd Ramadan to win a second 2200m maiden with Mountain Fresh, while the concluding race was a sthird 200m maiden which went to the Jaber Bittar-trained Rs Inaam under Jesus Rosales.
It was a double for the trainer who had earlier won the 2400m handicap with the David Badel-ridden Sami Lotois.
Gerald Avranche landed the 1400m handicap on Eric Lemartinel’s Nabila to justify his trip from Bahrain for the evening.
