RESULTS MIXED FOR SUFFOLK DOWNS’ 2009 MEET
EAST BOSTON, MA - Suffolk Downs wrapped up its 2009 racing season with an increase in all-sources handle and a decline in live wagering, track officials announced today.
All-sources handle for the 101-day live meet was up 7% from last year on the strength of 10% growth in transmitted handle. On-track handle was down 22% from last year.
Orlando Bocachica captured the first riding title of his career, amassing 111 wins. Bocachica finished 16 wins ahead of last year's titleholder Winston Thompson. Bocachica won with 19% of his mounts for earnings of $996,684.
John Rigattieri continued his reign atop the trainer standings, earning his sixth consecutive title. Rigattieri saddled 58 winners from 261 starters (22%). Rafael Ramos was second with 50 wins.
Aurora Springs Stable was the leading owner for the second time in three years, making 30 appearances in the winner's circle. Former Eclipse Award winning owner Michael Gill, last year's leader, was second with 29 wins.
