Rewilding gives Dettori double delight in Dubai Sheema Classic
Rewilding gave Frankie Dettori a big race double on the night and Godolphin a third victory of the evening, when running on strongly in the home straight to take the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic in a new course record for the 2410m turf course at Meydan.
Frankie settled Rewilding in mid pack early on as Laaheb under Richard Hills broke smartly from gate one for the early lead before giving way to Japanese hope Rulership and Christophe Soumillon, who towed the field down the backstretch and around the home turn.
Redwood fared best of the rest, running his usual honest race for Michael Hills, ahead of Calvados Blues who ran on under Ahmad Ajtebi for third with Laaheb holding on for fourth ahead of Chinchon from France and a tiring Rulership in sixth. The margin of victory at the line was three and a quarter lengths, with a neck back to Calvados Blues in third, and the winning time of 2 minutes 29.01 seconds a new course record.
The race was a triumph for trainer Mahmoud Al Zarooni who saddled the first and third home, Afterwards a delighted Frankie Dettori said "It was just a fantastic feeling. He hit a flat spot at the top of the stretch, but once we worked through the gears he ran on well”.
Runner up Michael Hills had no complaints," It was a huge run from my horse. I had to work to hold position on the turn, but I think there are more big races in this horse. Frankie's horse is very good”.
