ROSARIO RIDES FIVE WINNERS TO TIE BEJARANO ATOP STANDINGS
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 1, 2009) — Favorite Maui Mark, fourth at the head of the stretch, easily caught pacesetter Slam Slew with a furlong to run and drew away for a 3 1/4-length victory as Joel Rosario notched his fourth of five wins in Friday’s $48,000 allowance feature at Hollywood Park.
The five-win afternoon gave Rosario 14 as he moved into a tie atop the Hollywood Park jockeys’ standings with Rafael Bejarano, who is in Kentucky where he will ride Chocolate Candy in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
Maui Mark, trained by Howard Zucker, won for the third time in seven starts. The winner’s share of $37,440 raised the 4-year-old gelding’s earnings to $108,720.
The Hollywood Park record for wins on a program is six, set by Bill Shoemaker in 1953 and matched by Laffit Pincay Jr. in 1968, Shoemaker in 1970 and Kent Desormeaux in 1992.
Bejarano rode five winners on April 25 to pad his lead in the standings before heading for Kentucky. Rosario’s other wins came on Well Deserved ($7.80) in the second race, Dextera ($6.40) in the fourth, Kaffeinator ($5.40) in he sixth and Cadeaux Du Monde ($12.80) in the eighth race.
Racing resumes Saturday at Hollywood Park with a special 11 a.m. post time as the track will import the entire card from Churchill Downs. Gates open at 7 a.m. with the first import at 7:30 a.m. The Kentucky Derby will run between the eighth and ninth races on the Hollywood Park program with a 3:24 p.m. post time.
Feature event on-track is the return of 2008 CashCall Mile winner Diamond Diva in the $100,000 Wilshire Handicap, which runs as the 11th race on the 12-race card.
