SHANANIES SONG CAPTURES MONMOUTH SPRINT FEATURE
OCEANPORT, N.J. * Shananies Song, making her first start in 21 months, ran down S.S. Belle inside the sixteenth pole to score by a length and a quarter in the $41,000 allowance feature at Monmouth Park on Thursday.
The winner, trained by Ned Allard and ridden by Josiah Hampshire Jr., raced the six furlongs in 1:10 1/5 over the fast main track and paid $8.80 to win and $2.60 to place as second choice in the field of four fillies and mares.
Shananies Song, a 4-year-old daughter of Eltish owned by Charles T. Matses, had not started since Oct. 7, 2006, when she won the Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies Stakes. In her only season of racing, she won twice and was second in three starts.
S.S. Belle took command out of the gate, setting fractions of :22 2/5 for the quarter and :45 for the half, but could not hold off the winner in the last sixteenth of a mile.
