SHUDACUDAWUDYA FAVORED IN SATURDAY’S ALBANY STAKES
ALBANY -- Shudacudawudya has been made the favorite over Sourdough Sam and four other rivals in $50,000-added Albany Stakes, which will be run Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
The Albany is a six-furlong sprint for older horses and Shudacudawudya is the 9-to-5 choice on the morning line. Sourdough Sam is the second choice at 5-to-2.
Oct. 22 and then made his 4-to-5 odds look like a gift when he won a six-furlong allowance race by four lengths on Nov. 19.
Shudacudawudya is trained by Lloyd Mason and owned by Mason’s son, Brett, who bred the California-bred son of Marino Marini. A gem of consistency, Shudacudawudya has six wins, four seconds and a third in 12 career starts and $194,856 in earnings.
Sourdough Sam employed a powerful stretch kick to defeat Shudacudawudya by
1 1/4 lengths in the Oakland. The victory was the fourth in five starts at Golden Gate Fields for Sourdough Sam, who finished second in the race he didn’t win – the 2009 Golden Nugget Stakes, won by Shudacudawudya.
Sourdough Sam is trained by Dean Pederson and owned by his breeder, John Nicoletti. A 5-year-old gelding, California-bred Sourdough Sam is by Decarchy and out of the General Meeting mare General Luster. Sourdough Sam has five wins and a second in nine career outings and $168,400 in earnings.
Rated third on the morning line at 7-to-2 is Soldiers Point, a 4-year-old colt who has been victorious in three of his six career starts. Owned by Ann Marie Farm, Soldiers Point is a stablemate of Shudacudawudya in the Mason barn.
The Albany field is completed by Live Sundays (5-to-1), Gig Harbor (5-to-1) and Reagan Republican (12-to-1). Live Sundays ran third in the 2010 Oakland, Gig Harbor captured the 2011 Alcatraz Stakes on the turf, and Reagan Republican won an allowance sprint at Golden Gate Fields on Dec. 17.
Post time for Saturday’s nine-race program is 12:45 p.m. The Albany is the eighth race on the card and will be run at approximately 4:22 p.m.
LUCK Pick Six Saturday -- Fans at Golden Gate Fields will have the opportunity to play, via simulcast, the LUCK Pick Six Saturday, which is Sunshine Millions Day at both Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park.
The LUCK Pick Six, named in honor of the new HBO series on horse racing, will consist of three races at Gulfstream Park (races 8-10) and three races at Santa Anita (races 4-6). The bet will have a $1 minimum and feature a guaranteed pool of $250,000 and a mandatory payout.
The LUCK Pick Six will begin at approximately 1:10 p.m. (post time for Gulfstream’s eighth race) and conclude at approximately 2:37 p.m. (post time for Santa Anita’s sixth race).
All of the races in the LUCK Pick Six are stakes. At Santa Anita, California-breds will compete in the $100,000 Sensational Star, the $100,000 Crystal Water, and the $100,000 Valentine Dancer. At Gulfstream Park, Florida-breds will match strides in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf, the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Turf, and the $400,000 Sunshine Millions Classic.
LUCK is a racetrack-themed series based at Santa Anita and starring Dustin Hoffman. The show will premier on HBO on Sunday night.
