STRIKING TOMISUE VICTORIOUS IN WAYWARD LASS

OLDSMAR, Fla. (February 28, 2009) Striking Tomisue captured the 25th running of the $65,000 1 1/16 miles Wayward Lass Stakes today for owners Tomisue Hilbert and John R. Menard and trainer Nicholas P. Zito. Jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan had the call to ride the five-year-old daughter of Smart Strike to her fifth career victory.

Striking Tomisue broke alertly, settled behind early leaders Amazing and Boudoir throughout opening fractions, and moved to the lead at the sixteenth pole to win by one length in 1:45.50. Moon Catcher was second and Boudoir was third, yielding a trifecta payout of $184.40 for a $2 wager.

Winning rider Jermaine Bridgmohan said of his trip, “It turned out just right for me. I rode here a couple of weeks ago and I think that helped me. She broke real well and we got set up on the inside but close to the leaders. We had lots of room down there to the far turn but I thought it might tighten up. I edged her outside and I was pretty sure we were going to make a big run; just like she did for me in her last start. We were just surging by them at the end.”

Finish Lines… Holiday Inn Express Jockey of the Month Ronnie Allen, Jr. took three trips to the Winner’s Circle today, giving the reinsman 46 wins for the current Tampa meet. Allen booted home his first winner, C J’s Nannie, in the afternoon’s opener. The four-year-old Labeeb (GB) filly is under the care of trainer Forrest Kaelin for owners Thomas Shank and Stan Young. Allen scored again with the Tom Proctor trainee Fluid Grace. The Jump Start filly took home her first career win carrying the colors of Carolyn Wilson. Allen completed his hat trick with Brady Baby. Michelle Nehei saddled the Gone West colt, who has never finished out of the money, for owner Dell Ridge Farm.

Tampa Bay Downs’s second leading rider Rosemary Homeister, Jr. also rode three horses to victory today; her first win came aboard Max Ahead, a five-year-old Max’s Pal gelding bred in Florida by owner Tom Maida and trained by Robert A. Jeffries. Homeister struck again with Pound Foolish. The Exchange Rate gelding was bred in Florida by owner Jacqueline Tortora and trainer Emanuel Tortora.

Homeister got her third win in the afternoon’s nightcap aboard Cynthia’s Secret in the Lambholm South Race of the Week. The Florida-bred Cutlass Fax filly is owned by Luis De Hechavarria and is trained by Kathleen O’Connell.

Tomorrow is Kids and Family Day at Tampa Bay Downs with free games, pony rides and more in the Tampa Bay Downs Backyard from noon through 3 PM.

Racing resumes tomorrow, March 1 with an eleven race card; the Pick 6 carryover is $6,035.81.
