Sunday’s Child Noses Out Sarah Lane’s Oates Win

NEW ORLEANS (Saturday, March 03, 2012) – At the wire following a stirring stretch duel, Brittlyn Stable’s Sunday’s Child proved best by a nose over Garland Goins’ She’s Prado’s Idol in Saturday’s 10th anniversary edition of the $60,000 Sarah Lane’s Oates Stakes at Fair Grounds.

“She was very game,” said winning rider Rosie Napravnik of her filly’s courageous performance in the race restricted to 3-year-old fillies over the Stall-Wilson turf course. “She wasn’t giving up and that’s what made the difference.”

Sunday’s Child, trained by Al Stall Jr. returned mutuels of $10.20, $5.40 and $2.80, accomplished the about one-mile distance in 1:41.79 and increased her career earnings to $69,800 with her second win in three lifetime starts. The daughter of Any Given Saturday was going two turns and racing over grass for the first time in her career.

“We thought two turns would be her game,” said Stall in the winner’s circle after the Sarah Lane’s Oates. “Now we’ll probably bring her back in the ($75,000 Crescent City Oaks March 31.)”

She’s Prado’s Idol also ran with commendable courage before being assigned runner-up status by the photo finish camera. She paid $12.80 and $4.60, while favored Little Ms Protocol, owned by Coteau Grove Farms, finished third a length and a half farther back and returned $2.10 to show.

Dan Lynch, Ken Sentel and Merrill Scherer’s Leaha’s Princess made the pace with fractions of 25.03 and 50.64 before tiring.

Racing resumes Sunday at Fair Grounds with a 10-race program beginning at 12:40 p.m.
