TALAMO WINS FIVE, INCLUDING MOCCASIN ABOARD BICKERSONS

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 22, 2009) — Jockey Joe Talamo capped a four-win afternoon with a victory aboard eastern horse Bickersons in the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes on Sunday at Hollywood Park.

Talamo, 19, rode a perfect race, briefly relinquishing the lead on the backstretch when Bickersons was challenged by Neeko, and the Canadian-bred had plenty left when challenged by favorite Crisis of Spirit rounding the far turn.

Bickersons easily opened up at the head of the stretch and went on to win by 2 ½ lengths while covering seven furlongs on Cushion Track in 1:22.49.

“She kind of toyed with them the last part,” said Talamo, who went out and connected on A Jealous Woman in the nightcap for his fifth win of the day. A Jealous Woman was the only horse alive in the Pick Six as there was one winning ticket worth $98,203.

“I don't know if they're going to ship her out, but where ever they go, let me know,” he said of Bickersons. “Around the turn she was just taking deep breaths and I knew they'd have to run to catch her. I had a lot of horse and at the top of the stretch she just kicked instantly.”

Bickersons, owned by George and Lori Hall of Rumson, N.J., and trained by Kelly Breen, broke her maiden at Monmouth Park in July before finishing third in the Spinaway at Saratoga and third in the Oak Leaf at Santa Anita in October. In her previous start, the daughter of Silver Deputy tired and finished tenth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“I had no excuse why she ran so bad in the Breeders' Cup, I wish I did,” Breen said. “We had talked in the past about putting blinkers on her, but after today there's no reason to make any changes.

"We had a tentative plane to go back to our farm in Kentucky on Tuesday, but we might have to put that on hold.”

Bickersons paid $9, $5 and $3.20. Miss Heather Lee, second under Victor Espinoza, returned $5.40 and $3.60, while the show payoff on It Tiz with Joel Rosario up was $3.20. Crisis of Spirit, the 7-5 betting choice had to settle for fourth.

The victory was worth $60,000, raising Bickersons’ earnings to $149,180.
