THREE-DAY CARRYOVER OF $1,210,706 INTO SATURDAY’S PICK SIX
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2009) – Bonjour’s 14-1 upset in Friday’s $58,336 optional claiming feature contributed largely to the first three-day carryover in Santa Anita’s Pick Six, totaling $1,210,706, since Feb. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, of last year when a single winning ticket returned a record $3,120,256.80.
It is expected that the Pick Six pool on Saturday could possibly reach $4 million, with at least 10 horses scheduled to compete in each of the Pick Six races that begin with the fourth on a nine-race program that gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
Other winners in the popular exotic wager’s sequence included Fastongrass, $15 in the third while upsetting 7-5 choice Pride; Shantika’s Pride, $36.20 in the fourth, and Magic Mike, $17.20 in the sixth. The only Pick Six race favorite to score was Too Much Heat, at $5.20 in the fifth.
In the 1¼-mile turf feature, Bonjour tracked early leader Soupy, took command entering the stretch and drew off to score by 2 ¼ lengths. Mr. Universo was second with troubled 11-10 favorite Good Request settling for third another head behind.
The winner, a 9-year-old New Zealand-bred gelding trained by Steve Knapp, ran the distance in 2:01.91 after capturing his previous start in a 6-1 upset.
Bonjour paid $31.60, $16.20 and $7. Brazilian-bred Mr. Universo, with Jose Valdivia aboard, returned $7.20 and $3.20. Good Request, who raced boxed in on the rail through much of the stretch with Garrett Gomez in the saddle, paid $2.60 to show.
Owned by the partnership of Michael J. Miller and Redwood Racing Ventures, Bonjour earned $33,600, which lifted his career total to $221,175 from an overall record of 11-1-6 in 37 trips to the post.
Saturday’s feature is the Grade II, $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap at 1 1/16 miles. It will be included in the Pick Six sequence as the eighth race. Well Armed, a multiple graded stakes winner who was third behind Curlin in last year’s $6 million Dubai World Cup, is the 3-1 morning line favorite.
