Treble for Buick and Selvaratnam at Jebel Ali

"The Jebel Ali sprint prep, over 1000m and kindly sponsored by the Kingwood Stables base of trainer Marcus Tregoning, owned by his main patron His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was won by Alo Pura, trained on the course by Dhruba Selvaratnam for his main patron Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

William Buick was in the saddle on the five-year-old mare who was the highlight of a treble for himself, trainer and owner which leaves Buick disputing the jockeys’ championship with Fernando Jara.

Alo Pura, a daughter of Anabaa, only led close home and Buick was pleased: “She is a nice mare with a lot of speed and a touch of class. This is a bit short (trip) for her but she battles well.”

Buick had earlier won a 1600m handicap on Airbuss and was then to win a 1400m handicap on Dahteer who was winning his fourth race on the bounce.

Buick continued: “Dahteer continues to progress and has been a star this season, while we hoped bringing Airbuss back to Jebel Ali would have a positive outcome and so it has proved.”

Adi Selvaratnam, brother of Dhruba, rarely seems to leave Jebel Ali without a winner and his Melhor Impossivel, under Richard Mullen, won a 1200m handicap.

The opening 1800m handicap, restricted to Purebred Arabians foaled in the UAE, was won by Gill Duffield’s As Mushrif under Champion Jockey Ted Durcan, while the concluding 1600m handicap went to Stalking Shadow for Mubarak Bin Shafya and Ahmad Ajtebi.

Erwan Charpy’s Calabash Cove, under Tadhg O’Shea, beat stable companion Mutajammel in the 1950m handicap and Charpy said: “It is nice to get a winner as we have had a lot of close calls recently. Both horses have run big races and it is a very pleasing result.”
