Trip For A.J. Best In Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Peter Fuller’s Trip for A.J., a homebred daughter of Trippi, cruised across a firm turf course to win the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf by a half length.
Trained by Milton Wolfson and ridden by John Velazquez, Trip for A.J. covered the 1 1/8th mile course in 1:49.49. Askbut I Won’ttell finished second and Scolara third.
Trip for A.J. has won seven of 14 starts – four of seven across the turf. She paid $14.40 to win.
Trainer Milt Wolfson (Trip for A.J.): “She was a little short for her last race (5th in Marshua’s River). She had an abscess in a foot a couple of weeks before and I was afraid to train her too hard coming up to the race, but we got that cleaned up and were able to get her ready for this one properly. She’s been so exciting to have. She runs on turf or dirt, but I’d rather keep her on turf as long as possible, although I’m not sure what’s next. I’ve got her 3-year-old half-sister by Black Mambo. She’s un-raced.
Jockey John Velazquez (Trip for A.J.): “I wanted to try to ease her off the pace a little today. I think a mile and an eighth might be a little too far for her so I wanted to reserve as much as I could for the stretch run. It worked perfectly. Around the first turn she relaxed and fell right off the bridle. I followed Leparoux’s horse (Speak Easy Gal) down the backside and when I asked her around the quarter pole she had plenty left.”
Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan (Askbut I Won’ttell): “My trip was wider than I anticipated. She ran hard but I had to lose a lot of ground around the far turn. I didn’t get caught in any traffic – I just had to go around everyone on the far turn.”
Jockey Eibar Coa (Dynaslew): “She acted up a bit in the gate and I think that affected her a little in the race. She was a little keen and I think what happened in the gate showed in the result of the race.”
(Note: Wolfson claimed Trip for A.J.’s half-sister Annabill several years back at Calder from owner-breeder Peter Fuller and she went on to win multiple stakes and over $600,000. Fuller later contacted Wolfson and asked if he would like to train Trip for A.J. for him.).
