VETERAN RIDER GONZALEZ RIDES TWO WINNERS AT FAIR
SAN MATEO -- Roberto Gonzalez, who at age 54 is the dean of the Northern California jockey colony, rode two winners Thursday at the San Mateo County Fair at Bay Meadows.
Gonzalez scored with a pair of heavily-backed favorites, taking the first race with Star Cat Go ($2.80) and the fourth with Flashy Helmsman ($5.00). Gonzalez has ridden five winners at the fair and is tied for fourth in the jockey standings.
Racing continues at the fair Friday. Post time is 1:45 p.m.
Fans attending Bay Meadows Saturday will receive a commemorative poster celebrating Bay Meadows. The poster was created by former jockey Tom Chapman, who will be on hand to autograph the posters.
The fair will offer $1 grandstand admission to the final day of racing at Bay Meadows on Sunday. The $50,000-added Last Dance Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies, will be the final race on a 10-race program.
