VICTORINA TOPS UNSPOKEN WORD IN MARINA STAKES AT GOLDEN GATE FIELDS
ALBANY -- Victorina outran pacesetter Unspoken Word down the stretch to win the $65,900 Marina Stakes by three-quarters of a length Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.
Ridden by William Antongeorgi III and trained by Greg Gilchrist, Victorina stopped the timer in 1:37.32 while improving to 1-for-2 in one-mile races. Overall, Victorina has 12 victories in 22 career starts.
Victorina collared Unspoken Word in midstretch and methodically put her away in the final furlong to record her third victory in five starts this year.
"I felt confident the whole way," said Antongeorgi, who is 2-for-2 aboard Victorina. "I know this filly and know what she's capable of. She ran relaxed and just waited for me to ask her. I asked her at the quarter pole and she took off. She's all class."
Gilchrist watched Victorina's win via simulcast from Santa Anita, where he saddled High Resolve in the $100,500 Cascapedia Stakes. High Resolve ran second in the Cascapedia, beaten one length by Foxy Danseur.
"I thought Billy (Antongeorgi) rode a great race," said Gilchrist. "I knew Jerry (Hollendorfer, trainer of Unspoken Word) would send his horse (to the lead) because she seems to run her best races that way. I told Billy just don't let (Victorina) have too much to do. On the backstretch he had her just a few lengths off the lead and when he pushed the button the little mare said, 'OK.' I thought she ran real well."
Victorina was the 3-to-2 favorite in the Marina and paid $5.00 to win. Owned by the Estate of Harry J. Aleo, Victorina earned $30,750, a payday that boosted her career earnings to $573,875.
Racing resumes at Golden Gate Fields Wednesday. Post time is 12:45 p.m.
