War Kill Edges Selva In Beaumont

Lexington, Ky. (April 8, 2009)—War Kill scored a narrow victory over Selva in the $150,000, Grade 2 Beaumont Stakes Wednesday to give jockey Julien Leparoux his fourth win of the afternoon.

It was a two-horse race for more than half of the seven furlong, 184 feet race with no more than a half length separating the first two finishers as heavily favored Evita Argentina trailed the six-horse field.

“I was on the outside on the backstretch,” said Leparoux. “I tried to get her to relax. She relaxed very good and she fought all the way down the stretch. That was good.”

War Kill ran the distance in 1:25.97 while winning her third straight race. She finished a half length in front of Selva with Consequence another half length back in third.

Evita Argentina, winner of the San Vicente Stakes (G2) over colts in her last start, tried to rally along the rail under Garrett Gomez but had to settle for fourth as the 7-10 favorite.

“Things just didn’t work in her favor today,” said Gomez. “She ran her race. She ran good. She just put in a solid run and they weren’t backing up. The fractions were too soft for her early.”

War Kill is owned by William Shively’s Dixiana Stables and is trained by Ken McPeek. She increased her earnings to $139,405 with the winner’s purse of $93,000.

The winner, a daughter of War Chant, paid $35.40 as the second-longest price in the field.
