WEBN Stakes next step to Lane’s End

FLORENCE, KY . . . January 29, 2009 . . . Ten three-year-olds have been entered for the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday. Covering a mile, the race is the second of three local preps for the Lane’s End Stakes.

Azicharmyou was the runner-up in his debut, a maiden special sprint at Turfway, but followed with a 6 3/4-length win at the same level two weeks later in his second start, also a sprint at Turfway. He either set the pace or was right on top of it in both efforts, a style that will be put to the test in the WEBN, his first try around two turns. Rodney Prescott rides for trainer Larry Holt.

Music City comes in to the WEBN off back-to-back wins at Turfway, setting all the pace in both. He clocked quick fractions to win the first, a maiden claiming sprint, but slowed the pace down considerably to win the second, a mile allowance. He drew steadily off to win the first by 7 3/4 lengths and was never approached in the second, leading early by as much as eight lengths and winning by five. Otto Thorwarth was aboard for both wins and will be back aboard Saturday for trainer Bill Helmbrecht.

Parade Clown was second to Music City in the mile allowance race, but in his previous start, a maiden special, he sustained a long closing run to win over 1 1/16 miles. His experience around two turns and his ability to let others fight the early battle may give him the upper hand in the WEBN. Bill Troilo has the mount for trainer Katherine Ball.

Also setting sights on the WEBN Stakes are Scrimpy (jockey Dean Mernagh); Sirius Black, fifth in the first Lane’s End prep, the Turfway Prevue (Tom Pompell); Lookn Mighty Fast, third in the mud at Aqueduct last out but buoyed by the meet’s co-leading trainer, Mike Maker, and leading rider, Victor Lebron; Babamoon, in off two straight wins at Mountaineer (Julio Felix); Dynamite Bob (Manfredi Guzman); Sundays Baby Grand, fourth in the Prevue (Eddie Zuniga); and Dixiessaltshaker, ninth in the Prevue (Fernando De La Cruz).

The WEBN is the 11th of 12 races on Saturday’s card. First post is 1:10 p.m.

Formerly the Presidents Stakes, the WEBN Stakes has been sponsored since 2002 by Cincinnati rock radio station WEBN. The station also annually hosts the WEBN Stakes Party at Turfway on race day. Tickets are required for admission to the party but are free from the station via on-air giveaways and as prizes at Turfway Park on Dollar Fridays. Admission to the races is free, with no ticket required.

The third local prep for the Lane’s End, the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, is set for February 28.
