WHO’S THE COWBOY TAKES ICECAPADE GIVING ELLIOTT 5TH WINNER

OCEANPORT, N.J. * Gerald Sleeter’s Who’s the Cowboy ran down Joey P. in the shadow of the wire to capture the $75,000 Icecapade Stakes at Monmouth Park on Monday, giving jockey Stewart Elliott his fifth winner on the card. Earlier in the day in the $60,000 Gilded Time Stakes, Run Sully Run came flying down the center of a firm turf course, stepping the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01 4/5.

Who’s the Cowboy covered the six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:09 2/5 and returned $21, $6.20 and $2.80. It was a neck back to Joey P. who paid $3.20 and $2.10 and completed a $48 exacta. Maddy’s Lion rallied from last to third, two lengths farther back, and returned $2.60 to show.


“He’s just a good honest horse,” said winning trainer Kevin Sleeter. “He and Joey P. are two great horses and they put on quite a show today. Our horse is like part of the family and it’s always great to see him run like that.”

Monday’s win was the second this season and 13th overall for Who’s the Cowboy, a 6-year-old gelding by Intensity from the Better Arbitor mare Image’s Image. He has now earned $773,660 for his connections.

Elliott’s five-bagger kicked off in the first race on the Labor Day card when Foxy Date ($5.40) held on by a nose. Elliott booted home the early daily double, taking the second race aboard Faker ($8.80). The rider’s winning ways continued in the sixth race with King Puma ($3.40) and then in the seventh atop Hard to Explain ($8). Who’s the Cowboy capped the five-win day for Elliott, a 42-year-old native of Toronto, Canada, who is currently fourth in the Monmouth Park standings.

In the Gilded Time, the Cam Gambolati-trained Run Sully Run sat fourth and last through the early stages of the race before switching to the outside and mowing down his rivals. He returned $7.60 and $3.40 and topped a $20 exacta. It was a length and a half back to X Rated Cat, who finished second, but was disqualified and placed third for interference with Chitoz in the stretch. Chitoz returned $2.80 to place. There was no show wagering in the Gilded Time Stakes, which scratched down to four runners.

“There was a lot of speed in a field of just four,” said winning jockey Carlos H. Marquez Jr. “The game plan was to sit off the early pace, about five or six lengths back. When I asked him in the lane, he just really kicked it in beautifully. He didn’t really start running until we were past the wire.”

Monday’s win marked the fourth in 14 starts for Run Sully Run, a 3-year-old colt by Cherokee Run from the Woodman mare Woodman’s Dancer. He has now earned $161,931 for owners Ol Memorial Stable and C.E. Glasscock.
