Winter View tops John Rooney Memorial
June 9, 2009, Wilmington, DE- Augustin Stable's Winter View tops the $75,000 John W. Rooney Memorial at Delaware Park this Saturday. The mile and an eighth turf test for fillies and mares has attracted a field of fourteen.
In her most recent outing, Winter View posted a 2-length score in the one mile and a half Grade III Bewitch Stakes on the Keeneland turf course on April 23. Previously, the 5-year-old daughter of Thunder Gulch notched a 2-length in a turf allowance at Keeneland on April 5. The Kentucky-bred trained by Jonathan Sheppard has a career record of four wins, a second and three thirds from 20 starts with earnings of $206,379.
"Sometimes she just gets a little bit unlucky and you have got to have that closing kick in there," said trainer J. Larry Jones. "In her last, at Baltimore, she just a got a little weak in the last little bit. She is one of those mares that needs a fast pace to run at and we did not get it down. That is just how turf racing some times turns out. She is training like she will run just fine."
J. Mack Robinson's Drop a Line may be peaking just at the right time. In her latest effort, the 5-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid ran third in the mile and a sixteenth $50,000 Reluctant Ghost Stakes at Arlington Park on May 16. Previously, the Kentucky-bred trained by H. Graham Motion ran seventh in the mile and a sixteenth Grade III Doubledogdare at Keeneland on April 17. Her career mark is four wins, three seconds, and five thirds from 17 starts with earnings $219,992.
"She has always been a pretty consistent filly," said trainer H. Graham Motion. "I really do not know what to make of the race at Keeneland. It was the first time she really ever ran a bad race for me, so I do not know what to make of it. It is a throw out really. She is coming into the Rooney great. She is training well and she had a good work at Fair Hill on Saturday, so I feel like is in good form for the race. I think this race is a good fit for her."
