Santa Teresita tries dirt again in Sixty Sails Handicap

Stickney, IL—California invader Santa Teresita has made quite the living winning multiple races on the west coast, earning $453,430 in the process. Included in her four lifetime wins is a Grade 1 triumph in the Santa Maria Handicap, and three other victories on either synthetics or turf. When she’s not winning, she’s been sharp in defeat, too; in her last start she was a clear second to Life is Sweet in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Handicap. But what about her record on dirt? Good question and one that may be answered on Saturday in the Grade 3, $200,000 Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne Race Course.

In Santa Teresita’s lone attempt on traditional dirt in the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap, she was a distant seventh, beaten 26 ¼-lenghts by Hysterical Lady. And while there are no apparent Hysterical Lady-types in this field, and her trip in the Delaware Handicap was far from clean, it would still seem reasonable—for now—to question her abilities over a track void of grass or manufactured products.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (April 14, 2009) – One of the best ways for a family to spend a Sunday afternoon together is at Arlington Park. Every Sunday from May 24 through Sept. 6 is a Family Day, which returns for the 2009 season with new themes that include partnerships with area sports teams including the Schaumburg Flyers and the Chicago Fire; area attractions such as Legoland, DuPage Children Museum and Brookfield Zoo; and three “family friendly” concerts.

Kentucky Derby 135 Update (4.13.09)

Bo Hirsch’s Papa Clem proved again that California-based 3-year-olds are at home anywhere in the country when he rallied from fifth and wore down Fox Hill Farm’s favored Old Fashioned to win Saturday’s 73rd running of the $1 million Arkansas Derby (Grade II) before a crowd of 55,193 at Oaklawn Park.

With the victory, Papa Clem punched his ticket to the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) at Churchill Downs on May 2. Kentucky Oaks 135 Update (4.13.09)

Stewart Armstrong’s favored Dream Play cruised to an early lead over a sloppy track at Aqueduct was never seriously challenged as she romped to a 5 ¼-length victory in Saturday’s $147,000 Comely (Grade III).

The race marked Dream Play’s first try at a distance beyond six furlongs and her initial run over a wet racing surface, but the daughter of Hennessy passed both tests beautifully as she covered the mile distance in 1:39.51 under jockey Eddie Castro. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee won for the third time in five races and pushed her career earnings to $186,406.

ARCADIA, Calif. (April 12, 2009) – Garrett Gomez’s bid to tie Santa Anita’s record of 19 stakes races during a single season was denied on Sunday when 7-10 favorite Tuscan Evening faded to third behind victorious Gotta Have Her in the Grade III, $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs over the track’s hillside turf course.

Tyler Baze stole the day’s thunder from the nation’s leading jockey in purse earnings the last three years when he rallied 5-1 shot Gotta Have Her on the far outside to nip Reba Is Tops by a nose. Pace-setter Tuscan Evening wound up another three-quarters-of-a-length behind after having yielded to the latter’s pressure through a swift early pace. The winning time was 1:11.92.
