SAINT LEON EXITS ARLINGTON SPRINT IN DIVINE FORM

Saint Leon has long been considered one of the best sprinters on the grounds at Arlington International Racecourse, but after Saturday’s gutsy victory in the Listed $100,000 Arlington Sprint, the 8-year-old speed demon could be mentioned as one of the best in the country. Sprinting wire-to-wire in a race turned inside-out by a bad break, the son of Stravinsky dueled the length of the stretch with Hogy, eventually turning back the highly regarded graded stakes winner to win by a head under E. T. Baird.

GENERAL ELECTION ON TARGET FOR AMERICAN DERBY, SECRETARIAT

WinStar Farm’s Grade III $150,000 Arlington Classic winner General Election is on target to take a stab at becoming only the second winner of the Mid-America Triple in its current all-turf configuration. The only other horse to win all three – Grade III Arlington Classic, Grade III American Derby and Grade I Secretariat Stakes – was Honor Glide in 1997. That Bonnie Heath homebred won his first stakes in the Arlington Classic and would go on to win graded stakes through his 7-year-old season – including two Grade Is.

STIDHAM’S TREND ANYTHING BUT A FAD

The only thing passing about Trend in Wednesday’s featured eighth race was his whereabouts in relation to the field and the wire. Stone Farm’s strapping homebred son of Grade I winner Sligo Bay dismantled a group of impressive stakes-performing allowance horses en route to a facile 2 ¼-length victory.
