IRISH EYES FOCUS ON BALLYROAN STAKES AT LEOPARDSTOWN THURSDAY

British-bred Arlington Million candidate Treasure Beach, owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor, is scheduled to go to the post in Ireland’s Group III Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown Thursday evening in a final tune-up for the 30th anniversary edition of the upcoming Grade I Arlington Million on Aug. 18.

Adrian Beaumont of the Newmarket-based International Racing Bureau advised Arlington racing officials that Treasure Beach is training well and that Thursday’s run is to serve as a preparation the Million, and that unless he runs poorly he remains “all systems go” for Chicago’s traditional showcase Thoroughbred race.

TWO ILLINOIS OWNERS STAKES HIGHLIGHT SATURDAY CARD

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 8, 2012) – With international horses slated to take center stage for the Aug. 18 Arlington Million and International Festival of Racing, Arlington Park sheds this weekend’s stakes spotlight on locally owned horses by presenting $100,000 Illinois Owners Stakes in both open and distaff divisions. Each race is slated for a mile and a sixteenth on the turf.

The filly and mare division, which goes as race 8 on the 11-race card, features no fewer than four stakes winners including Mark Hoffman & Earl Trostud Jr.’s Grade I victress Hooh Why, who ran second in the Grade III Ontario Matron at Woodbine in her last start and earlier this year finished third in the Grade III Arlington Matron. Rosemary Homeister Jr. rides the Mike Reavis trainee.

All systems remain on ‘go’ for the British-bred European-based Treasure Beach to add his name to the historical connection between the Arlington Million and the Secretariat Stakes.

As the winner of last summer’s Grade I Secretariat Stakes, the Aidan O’Brien trainee now owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor remains on target for his attempted encore in the 30th anniversary edition of the Grade I Arlington Million during Arlington’s upcoming one-day International Festival of Racing now just days away on August 18.

GOLD EDGE, ALL HER CLASS LOOKING AT LASSIE FOLLOWING LISA M

Dolphus Morrison’s Gold Edge and Frank Calabrese’s All Her Class, first and second respectively less than a length apart at the finish in Saturday’s $67,100 Lisa M Stakes, might well be matching strides again in Chicago’s centerpiece race for 2-year-old fillies, the upcoming Grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie to be contested at one mile on Sept. 8.

“This filly has unbelievable talent,” said trainer Lon Wiggins immediately following the Lisa M of the winning Gold Edge, “but she’s kind of ‘quirky.’ We’ve worked with her a lot on that, but she’s still not quite where we want to be with her. She got a little nervous on us in the paddock before the race today.

GOLD EDGE, MUPPET MAN SHARE SATURDAY STAKES HONORS

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 4, 2012) – The first 2-year-old stakes races of the season in Chicago went to favorites as Dolphus Morrison’s Gold Edge captured the $67,100 Lisa M Stakes for fillies and Curtis Green’s Muppet Man scored in the open counterpart, the $66,700 Meadowlake Stakes.

In the Lisa M, Gold Edge overcame early traffic problems and was able to get to the outside in upper stretch in time to rally for a ¾-length victory over All Her Class. With Chris Emigh in the irons, the Lon Wiggins-trained daughter of Eddington covered the seven furlongs over Polytrack in 1:25.93.

DANNY MILLER READIES ROMACACA FOR UPCOMING BEVERLY D. STAKES

It’s Miller time – or maybe more precisely it’s Romacaca time. At least that’s the way veteran Arlington trainer Danny Miller feels as he prepares Frank Calabrese’s 6-year-old mare for the Grade I Beverly D. Stakes now just two weeks away on August 18.

It was Danny Miller who first claimed Romacaca for $25,000 for Calabrese back in South Florida during the winter of 2009.

ROMANS’ INVADERS TRYING TO CONQUER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Trainer Dale Romans has saddled two winners of Arlington’s Grade I Secretariat Stakes in past years, but in his lone attempt at victory in the Grade I Arlington Million his horse missed by three lengths as the runner-up.

In 2004, Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Kitten’s Joy captured the Secretariat for Romans with Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey aboard, and two summers ago Donegal Racing’s Paddy O’Prado, with Kent Desormeaux up, gave Romans his second Secretariat score.

ARLINGTON MILLION PROSPECT AFSARE EARNS AN ‘A’ IN YORK RUN JULY 28

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s British-bred Afsare, one of the prime European-based prospects for the upcoming Grade I Arlington Million Aug. 18, ran an excellent race at York Saturday when finishing runner-up by a neck in the Group II Sky Bet York Stakes.

The 5-year-old altered son of Dubawi, trained by Italian-born Luca Cumani, won the listed Ambant Gala Stakes in his previous outing July 6 at Sandown and had finished second in Italy’s Group I Premio Presidente della Repubblica at Campannelle before that on May 13.

Arlington Park Barn Notes: Fri. July 27

The ‘Cat’ is on the prowl again. One day after Arlington’s runner-up all-time leading trainer Wayne Catalano completed a fruitless journey to Saratoga to watch his “best horse in the race get beat,” Arlington’s often leading conditioner returned to his Chicago home base to saddle four winners on Thursday’s nine-race program.

It has been almost exactly four years since any Arlington conditioner saddled a win quartet at the local oval. Not surprisingly, it was Catalano who accomplished the feat that time as well. Also not surprisingly, Catalano’s banner afternoon gave him a three-win lead in the trainer standings entering Friday’s program.
