Delaware Park, Pimlico to be Reviewed by NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance Inspection Teams

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that Delaware Park in Stanton, Del., and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore will be the next U.S. racetracks reviewed by an inspection team as part of the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance accreditation process. The Delaware Park inspection will take place Monday and Tuesday, April 27-28. The review of Pimlico, home of the Preakness Stakes, will occur on Wednesday and Thursday, April 29-30. Earlier this month, Churchill Downs and Keeneland became the first North American racetracks to garner Alliance accreditation.

In preparation for their accreditation visits, Delaware Park and Pimlico each completed a 48-page written application that serves as the first step in the accreditation process. The tracks also hosted several meetings with Alliance officials. The on-site visits will include inspections of all facets of the racing facility, and interviews with track executives, racetrack personnel, jockeys, owners, trainers, stewards, regulators and customers.

Arlington Park Barn Notes: Sunday, April 26, 2009

In 2008, a pair of apprentice riders – Brandon Meier and Inez Karlsson – provided much of the story line in the Arlington Park jockey race with their battle for leading bug rider going down to the meet’s final days with Karlsson edging out Meier, who left for California a few days before the end of the local season.

Perhaps looking at the success shared by that tandem, apprentice jockey Michael Straight has decided to move his tack from Florida to Chicago for the upcoming season at the suburban Chicago oval that begins Friday, May 1.

Opening Statement from Jimmy Jerkens, trainer of Quality Road:

“It was decided just to give him a jog today because he hadn’t had much time for the crack to dry out. So, instead of galloping him, which probably would have put a little too much stress on him, we just jogged him a couple of miles and he handled that very well and jogging obviously is a lot easier on the horse in all ways, respiration wise and on the legs than galloping. It’s not quite as good a conditioner…but it’s all we could do to be on the safe side and he came back, the crack looked dry and there was no blood seeping from it, so we’re planning on patching him at 7-o-clock tomorrow morning and galloping him at about 9:20 after the second harrow break.”
