NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance Ciruclates Compliance Standards for Review

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that a comprehensive set of safety and integrity standards has been circulated to members of the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance. After a period of comment, the compliance standards will be finalized in early March and serve as the basis for Alliance accreditation, which also will begin in March. The Alliance, formed last October with the goal of establishing national uniform standards in the areas of safety and integrity, includes 55 racetracks in North America and every major national horsemen’s organization.

Compliance will cover five broad areas: injury reporting and prevention; creating a safer racing environment; aftercare and transition of retired racehorses; medication and testing; and safety research. Within those five categories, specific standards will focus on many areas including:

Kentucky Derby 135 Update 2.23.09

Having already faced some of Southern California’s outstanding prospects for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I), Mayor Marv was relatively battle-tested for a horse that had only one win in six races heading into Saturday’s $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby at Arizona’s Turf Paradise.

His first trip out of Southern California and initial step into stakes company was a rousing success as Mayor Marv drew away in the stretch for an easy 4 ½-length victory over Hidden Bounty. David Flores was aboard Mayor Marv as he notched his second consecutive win after five career-opening losses that included solid efforts behind Kentucky Derby contenders The Pamplemousse, the winner of the San Rafael (GII), and Robert B. Lewis (GII) runner-up Papa Clem.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2009) – Spring House split horses in deep stretch and held off hard-charging Church Service by one-half length Sunday to become only the second back-to-back winner of Santa Anita’s Grade II, $150,000 San Luis Obispo Handicap while negotiating the 1 ½-mile distance on turf in 2:27.26, just five one-hundredths of a second slower than in the previous year’s 52nd running.

Alex Solis, who had ridden the 7-year-old gelding in his last two starts, was aboard as Spring House went off at odds of 7-1 after being dispatched as the 17-10 favorite in 2008 with Garrett Gomez in the saddle.

Although Rail Trip has been nominated to the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 7, chances of the unbeaten gelding running in the mile and a quarter classic seemed extremely remote Sunday. His regular rider, Jose Valdivia Jr., has been engaged to ride Champs Elysees by Bobby Frankel in the Big ’Cap, a decision the Hall of Fame trainer confirmed this morning.

“We nominated, but we’re probably not going to run,” trainer Ron Ellis said of Rail Trip, who posted his fourth consecutive impressive victory last Friday, but who has never run in a stakes race. Asked about the possibility of running in the Grade II, $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap on April 4, Ellis was non-committal.
