ODDS-ON HYPERBARIC WINS MONDAY DEL MAR HEADLINER

Prestonwood Racing's Hyperbaric had to work hard, but his hard work paid off when he tallied by a neck Monday afternoon in the $75,000 allowance feature at the seaside track.

The gelded 5-year-old by grass champion Sky Classic raced a mile and a sixteenth on the Del Mar turf in a rapid 1:40.51 to earn a first prize of $45,000 in the 3-year-old and up headliner. He was ridden by last year's Eclipse Award winning rider, Garrett Gomez, who was recording his third victory of the afternoon. He is trained by Julio Canani.

STREET BOSS WINS BING CROSBY HANDICAP

Stretch-running Street Boss confirmed his status as the West's best sprinter today with a stylish come-from-behind victory in the featured Grade I $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap.

With David Flores in the saddle, Street Boss dropped back to last place in the early stages of the six-furlong dash, content to bide his time as the front-runners battled for command.

Record $1,561,987 Pick Six Carryover at Del Mar

An almost unprecedented string of longshots Saturday led to a record Pick Six carryover at Del Mar of $1,561,987, which will be added to Sunday’s Pick Six pool. The track’s previous high carryover was $1,117,973 on July 29, 1990.

The six-race sequence saw every favorite defeated, several by stout outsiders. The upsets mean Sunday’s Pick Six Pool at the track is likely to surpass the track’s all-time Pick Six total pool of $3,555,771 established on August 15, 1998.

EASTERN INVADER STORM MESA WINS SAN CLEMENTE HANDICAP

Storm Mesa, an invader from the East who won the Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows in her previous race, made a successful leap into racing's major leagues today with an upset victory in Del Mar's featured $150,000 San Clemente Handicap for three-year-old fillies.

Ridden by veteran Eddie Martin, Jr., who was making his Del Mar debut, Storm Mesa overcame traffic trouble to rally wide and wear down the leaders to score a convincing 1 1/4–length triumph in stakes record time of 1:33.54 for the mile over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course. The previous mark was 1:33.62 by Katdogawn in 2003.

STREET BOSS CROSBY FAVORITE, REIGNING CHAMP THIRD CHOICE

Street Boss, on a four-race win streak, rates as a clear favorite on the morning-line for Sunday's 63rd running of the Grade I, $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap at 6 furlongs on the main track.

The late-running sprinter is the 9-5 program choice in a field that smacks of much early speed, which should help set the race up for Street Boss' big stretch kick. That's what trainer Bruce Headley and jockey David Flores are banking on.

'MYSTERY HORSE' STORM MESA SETTLES IN FOR SAN CLEMENTE

For all those oldtimers who remember radio's "I Love a Mystery," the hunch bet for Saturday's Grade II, $150,000 San Clemente would be Storm Mesa, tabbed as the race's "mystery horse."

The mystery moniker comes from the fact the 3-year-old filly has run only in the Midwest and South since going to trainer W. Bret Calhoun from Southern California-based Tim Yakteen after two unsuccessful races, the first at Del Mar last summer. She's now on a four-race win streak which includes the Grade III Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows in her most recent start.

COULD SAN CLEMENTE BRING SECOND COMING OF MEGAHERTZ?

Trainer Barry Abrams is hoping to put some real sizzle into Saturday's Grade II, $150,000 San Clemente Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on the Del Mar turf course.

The sizzle, he hopes, will come from Bel Air Sizzle, whom he will saddle for the San Clemente.

Outrun in the early furlongs of the 5 1/2 furlong dash, Babs Moossa, the 3-1 second choice, rallied into contention in the upper stretch and then wore down Triumphant Flight for the photo finish triumph.

LAVA MAN FANS MAY HAVE SEEN LAST OF HIM AT THE RACES

It's not official, and it might not happen right now, but there's a good chance that Lava Man may have raced for the last time, in Sunday's Grade I Eddie Read Handicap.

The 7-year-old warrior finished last of six in the 1 1/8-mile turf race and the owners -- STD Stable and Jason Wood -- expect to make a decision soon on his future.
